The Basics of Just Cause

The number one reason that people contact the Tompkins County Workers Center is because they feel as if they've been unfairly or unjustly terminated from their job. In fact, a feeling that someone has been unfairly fired from their job accounts for approximately 26% of the over 5,000 cases TCWC gotten over the years!

Just Cause is designed to address this problem directly, by giving workers key pretections in the workplace:

  • Just Cause would outlaw no cause firings, establish a list of “just causes” for termination
  • Just Cause would establish a standard of Progressive Discipline for addressing employee conduct/performance
  • Just Cause will establish a Workers Rights Commission that will hear cases of wrongful temriantion and make a legally binding ruling that an initiate a lawsuit for back pay and/or reinstatement

Just Cause is just common sense. The U.S is among only a handful of countries in the world where at-will employment is still the norm.
